Top 10 Tips for Passing the White Card Test
1. Know the Hierarchy of Controls
Memorise the order: Elimination, Substitution, Engineering, Administrative, PPE. Many questions test whether you know which control is most effective. Always choose elimination first.
2. Understand WHS Duties
Know the duties of PCBUs (s 19), workers (s 28), and officers (s 27) under the WHS Act 2011. Understand "reasonably practicable" and the right to cease unsafe work (s 84).
3. Learn Safety Sign Colours
Red circle = Prohibition (do not). Blue circle = Mandatory (must do). Yellow triangle = Warning. Green rectangle = Emergency information. This comes up repeatedly.
4. Know Fire Extinguisher Types
Water (no band) = Class A. Foam (cream) = A+B. CO2 (black) = B+E. ABE Dry Chemical (white) = A+B+E. Never use water on electrical fires. Remember PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
5. Master Hazard Identification
Understand the difference between a hazard (source of harm) and a risk (likelihood + consequence). Know the risk management process: Identify, Assess, Control, Review.
6. Remember PPE Is Last Resort
PPE is the least effective control in the hierarchy. Questions often test whether you know that elimination or engineering controls should be tried first. PPE only protects the individual wearing it.
7. Understand Working at Heights Basics
There is no minimum height threshold β any fall risk counts. Guardrails (passive protection) are preferred over harnesses (active). Know the 3 points of contact rule for ladders.
8. Know the Emergency Procedure
RACE: Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Extinguish. Triple Zero is 000. Know evacuation procedures, muster point locations, and the recovery position for unconscious casualties.
9. Practice Under Timed Conditions
Take full practice exams with the timer on. This builds exam confidence and helps you manage your time during the real assessment.
10. Review Wrong Answers
After each practice exam, carefully review every incorrect answer. Read the explanations and understand why the correct answer is right. Our spaced repetition system will resurface these questions.
